BULLPIT

2017

video-loop  | 11:00 min

In Bullpit you can see a pogoing group of policemen in riot police uniform. It is unclear in which context the scene takes place. It oscillates between a brutal clash and the silly scramble of little boys. Slapsticism and aggressiveness go hand in hand. The slow motion makes the movements seem dance-like, even tender. Violence is replaced by play, the street battle is replaced by a loving brawl. The police as guardians of security act in an irrational act of excess. The whole thing is a border crossing that contradicts the determination of the police officers as guardians of law and order. The video suggests a utopia in which state power has become obsolete and is only directed against itself. Demonstrators fighting policemen are familiar images. A strange image are policemen who fight against policemen, the opponent is himself. In BULLPIT the horizon forms the borderline between violence and lust.

Anti Sol is science fiction and mysticism, proportion theory and conceptual art. Like the black monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey, Anti Sol appears to stem from another world, weightlessly suspended in space. The object‘s flashing lights signify a Morse code in a strange and foreign language, communicating with the observer without providing the key for decryption. The sculptural piece Anti Sol is a formally distinct entity, suggesting a narrative element.

As a sculpture, Anti Sol refers to the Cube installations by Sol LeWitt. Moritz Stumm transfers the physical grid-like properties in Sol LeWitts sculptures into the medium of light. For this purpose the empty spaces in LeWitts constructions are replaced by black solid planes. Four light sources radiate from the interior of the cube through the visible grids. The resulting patterns of light survey the dimensions of the space surrounding the cube and extend the sculpture into its environment. The light emanating from Stumms sculpture pervades its surroundings and creates a visible relation between the dimensions of the room and the size of the observer. The light intertwines the proportions of the surrounding space with the proportions of the sculpture, which are again proportionally reflected in the size of the observer.

HOMA

AV performance, 20 min

2017

with Elisa Jule Braun and Ace Mahbaz

HOMA is an audiovisual performance, in which sound, visuals and sign language come together and complement each other, but can never be completely deciphered. The performance consists of three parts: visuals, sound and a narrative technique, which is a mix of sign language, meme and physical theatre. Ace has biosensors attached to his arms, which measure his muscle contraction and which enable him to create and manipulate sound and visual effects.

Sign language and its related culture are threatened with extinction. Even though it was not until the second half of the twentieth century that a genuine recognition and development as an independent culture has developed. Due to the progress of medical technology, there will be less and less deaf people, and with them sign language and the related culture will disappear. This phenomenon affects not only the Deaf community, but also the diversity of the human being in general. This raises moral and philosophical questions about human development through the influence of technology.

The sculpture Splinter/ Fist refers in its reduction to minimalism, but at the same time awakens associations with rioting and vandalism.

UNSTERN

In kaleidoscopic scenes, “Unstern” illuminates the very moment before catastrophe strikes; it is a blend of violence, nationalist propaganda, incipient battle cries, machismo and insecurity. Expressive images form narrative sequences of motion and performative scenes. A sequence of conditions, sensations and motives results in an image of a society on the edge of an abyss and the onset of a new era.
